Abstract
Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a common nosocomial infection among patients undergoing mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Consistent implementation of oral hygiene is one of the key preventive measures. This study aimed to determine the correlation between nurses’ knowledge level and their compliance in performing oral hygiene in the ICU of Tzu Chi Hospital Jakarta. This research employed a quantitative correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all 20 ICU nurses, selected through total sampling. The instruments used were a knowledge questionnaire developed by the researcher and validated by expert panels using the Content Validity Index (i-CVI =1.00; s-CVI = 0.98), and an observation sheet for compliance based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). The results showed that 90% of nurses had good knowledge, 10% had moderate knowledge, and none had low knowledge. Meanwhile, compliance revealed 70% of nurses were compliant, while 30% were non-compliant. The Spearman correlation test obtained ρ = −0.119 with p = 0.618, indicating no significant relationship between knowledge level and compliance. These findings suggest that high knowledge does not necessarily translate into compliant behavior. Therefore, managerial support, clinical supervision, and continuous education programs are essential to improve compliance. This study is expected to serve as a basis for developing strategies to prevent VAP and enhance nursing care quality in the ICU. Keywords: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), oral hygiene, nurses knowledge, compliance, Intensive Care Unit.
