Abstract
Urinary catheterization is a common nursing procedure performed in hospitals, especially for post-operative patients or those on complete bed rest. This procedure carries the risk of causing urinary tract infections if not performed according to standard operating procedures. One factor suspected of influencing nurses' compliance in carrying out the procedure is their level of knowledge. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and the level of nurses' compliance with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for urinary catheterization in the ICU and Obstetrics Rooms of Tzu Chi Hospital. This study used a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 66 nurses selected using a total sampling technique. The instruments used were a knowledge questionnaire and a compliance observation sheet. Data analysis used the Gamma test. The results showed that most nurses had a good level of knowledge (69.7%) and a high level of compliance (63.6%). The Gamma test showed a positive and significant relationship between the level of knowledge and the level of nurses' compliance with the SOP for urinary catheterization with a p-value of 0.002 <0.05 and a correlation value of r = 0.309. In conclusion, nurses' knowledge is related to their compliance with the SOP for urinary catheter insertion. The higher the nurses' knowledge, the higher their level of compliance in carrying out the urinary catheter insertion procedure according to the SOP. Therefore, increased supervision and regular training regarding the SOP for urinary catheter insertion by hospitals are needed to ensure nurses are more compliant with established procedures and minimize the risk of complications for patients.
